SuRaLa Net Selected for EDU-Port Japan by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

Elaborate initiatives to support learning in Sri Lanka in crisis

Tokyo,Japan, July 29, 2022—SuRaLa Net Co.,Ltd., a Japanese leading EdTech company, is selected for MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, CULTURE, SPORTS, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY -JAPAN- 2022 EDU-Port Japan (Introduction of Japanese-style Education Using the Public-Private Collaborative Platform)Supported Project. This is the fourth time to be selected since 2018, and it will provide learning opportunities for children in Sri Lanka in the crisis in cooperation with local NGOs and other organizations, while leveraging our past achievements.

“Surala Ninja!” is an e-learning system developed for primary school students as an overseas version of “Surala”. Through interactive animations, students can enjoy learning the four arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the partner company, Next Learners (Pvt) Ltd., it has been providing e-learning for private schools and tuition schools, and also has also been actively involved in addressing the education inequality in Sri Lanka by operating “Surala JUKU” math classes for children from low-income families in collaboration with Women’s Bank, one of the largest microfinance organizations in the country, providing to the SOS Children’s Village, which supports children who are separated from their families, and Child Action Lanka, nation-wide children support NGO. Even in the midst of the economic crisis, Next Learners members and on-site facilitators are working together to continue Surala learning by creating a class schedule that avoids power outage times and other creative ways .

EDU-Port Japan is a “public-private, nationwide” initiative to proactively introduce Japanese-style education overseas by providing a platform from in which the public and private sectors collaborate in achieving this objective. Since 2016, the platform is supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and many other organizations including NGOs and private businesses. Since 2021, it has been promoting the project as “Research Project for promoting Japanese-style Education Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic (EDU-Port Japan 2.0)” and focuses on creating learning horizontally and interactive opportunities.

As a part of EDU-Port Japan project, SuRaLa RaLa Net has been working in Sri Lanka to promote exchanges with Japanese educators and the promotion of digital education under COVID-19. This year, in response to the loss of learning opportunities for children in Sri Lanka due to power outages and social instability caused by the economic crisis, it will collaborate with local NGOs and other organizations to enhance learning support to be inclusive of the growing poor population. In addition to holding seminars to expand cooperation with local NGOs, etc., the project also aims to create opportunities for students in Sri Lanka to interact and learn together with students in Japan and other countries by holding the Digital Math Contest as an international competition with Indonesia and other countries where SuRaLa Net operates, and by participating in the “Surara Cup,” a unique SuRaLa Net event where students compete for learning.

SuRaLa Net will continue to bring quality education to more children and contribute to solving the issue of educational disparities.

About the e-learning material “Surala Ninja!”
This e-learning system is developed for elementary school students as an overseas version so that students can enjoy learning the four rules of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through interactive animations. Students can learn at their own pace on their own devices, and educators can adjust the learning content based on students’ understanding and progress through the learning management system, thus realizing personalized learning for each student. Currently, there is a Sinhala version for Sri Lanka, an Indonesian version for Indonesia, and an English version that is mainly used in India and the Philippines.
